The Ceballos Lab is a cell and molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry lab dedicated to studying: (1) the evolution, ecology, and biogeography of microorganisms with an emphasis on thermophilic microbes; (2) mechanisms underlying double-stranded DNA virus-host dynamics across all three of the domains of life; (3) impacts of viral infection on cell function and cell-cell signaling; and, (4) development of microbial-based biotechnologies from thermophilic microbial systems.
The lab supports four core research projects with both U.S. and international partners:
Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology: Thermophilic Enzyme Sequestration Platforms
(funded by a NSF MCB grant and a UA Chancellor’s Innovation-Commercialization Fund Award)
Microbial Biogeography and Virus-Host Interactions in Extremophiles
(funded by a NSF RCN grant, a NSF REU grant, and UA Institutional/VPRED Funds)
Tropism of Herpesviruses in Selectively Differentiated Neural Stem Cells and Development of a Tunable 2D surface and 3D Matrix for Culturing Neurons
(funded in part by an Arkansas NSF EPSCoR CASE SEED grant and an Arkansas Biosciences Institute grant)
Food, Energy, Water and Ecosystems Resources: Interdisciplinary Projects
(funded by NSF RCN, NSF INFEWS, and NSF REU grants)
NSF INFEWS. In collaboration with: University Sao Paulo and Sao Paulo State University (Brazil); Universidad Libre de Pereira and La Universidad Rural y Agropecuaria (Colombia); La Universidad Autonoma de Chile, Universidad de Los Lagos, and Pontificia Universidad Catolica (Chile) – the Ceballos Lab is part of a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional Food, Energy, Water Systems Biotechnology and Innovations Research Network focused on understanding the potential impacts of new technology on FEW systems. This includes modeling and forecasting economic and trade impacts. The lab is responsible for select components on a variety of collaborative and highly interdisciplinary projects with international partners.
NSF RCN. In collaboration with: Can Tho University and Vietnam National University-(Vietnam); Chiang Mai University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, and Mahasarakham University (Thailand); and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and Universiti Teknologi MARA (Malaysia) – the Ceballos Lab is part of a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional Food, Energy, Water, and Ecosystems Research Network focused on research in: Aquatic Biology/Microbiology and Ecosystems Science; Traditional Plants and Natural Products; Biofuel Feedstocks and Enzyme Systems; and, Impacts of Climate Change and Anthropogenic Disturbances on Ecosystems including the Lower Mekong Basin. The lab is responsible for select components on a variety of highly collaborative and highly interdisciplinary projects with international partners.
